Juniors Fiona Hennig and Rasheen Powell also competed for the Ying Scholarship, involving a research paper and a thesis defense before a panel of judges. Fiona Hennig was awarded the scholarship for her work with “Crystallization of Ribosomal Protein L1,” in addition to Highest Honors and Best of Show for a scientific photography contest. Rasheen Powell was awarded Honors for his poster, “Analysis of Ribosomal Protein L11 and the Need for Perfect Alignment.” Jamerdon Dean, a sophomore in the science research program, was the recipient of several awards, including High Honors and Best Computer-Based Project for his poster, “Tracing Evolution Through Ribosomal Protein.” For her project “Characterization of a Short Chain Oxidoreductase in M. tuberculosis,” senior Dana Hogan received Highest Honors and was named as one of the Grand Finalists to participate in the Intel ISEF competition in Los Angeles this coming May. This honor has been bestowed in past years upon Fiona Hennig and Rasheen Powell, and former student Jimmitti Teysir. The students competed again at the Western New York Science Congress on April 30th, where Dana and freshman Jordan Tick took gold medals, Rasheen won silver medals, and Jamerdon was awarded a bronze medal. Dana and Fiona also won a Naval Achievement in Science award. Congratulations to all the students! |
