order to obtain federal funding, recruit new scientific staff, and purchase
vital equipment and supplies, we often rely on seed funding provided
by private foundations. These contributions are the vital first step
necessary to obtain preliminary results. Without this support new research
projects could not be initiated and federal funding would be unattainable.
