Structures of Cu(II) Complexes of bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine(BPA),2-Pyridyliminodiacetate and Ligands with Tethered Units of BPA. Yohannes Tessema, Yilma Gultneh, Bassie Marvey and Ray Butcher, Chemistry Dept, Howard University, Washington, DC 20059 USA

We have prepared Cu(II) complexes of the title ligands and obtained the X-ray crystal structure. While the tethered units form four coordinate approximately square planar dinuclear Cu(II) complexes the ligand bpa itself forms a five-coordinate complex with a solvent and a ClO4- as co-ligands. In the product from the reaction of Cu(II) with of 2-pyridyl-iminodiacetic acid in methanol, the X-ray crystal structure shows coordination to Cu(II) via the amine and the pyridyl nitrogens and two chloride ions while the acetate groups are in the esterified form and dangling.
