The Advanced Photon Source: A New Tool for Crystallographic (and Other) Studies. Dennis M. Mills, Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory

A new generation 7 GeV synchrotron radiation source known as the Advanced Photon Source (APS) has begun operating at Argonne National Laboratory. This facility can provide 70 high brightness sources (35 bending magnet sources and 35 insertion device sources) with x-ray photons from a few kiloelectron volts to hundreds of kiloelectron volts to meet the needs of a variety of scientific disciplines. APS Users are currently commissioning their instrumentation and upwards to 40 beamlines are expected to receive radiation before the end of 1997. This talk will focus on the research capabilities of the APS and on some of the early results that are beginning to emerge from the scientists who are already utilizing the facility.
