Commissioning of a Commercial 2x2 Mosaic CCD Goniometer System for a Third Generation Synchrotron Source. James F. Fait, Adam Brown, Roger Durst, John Chambers, James Phillips, Mark Pressprich. Siemens Analytical X-Ray Systems, Inc. 6300 Enterprise Lane, Madison, WI 53719-1173

A complete goniometer and detector system has been designed and implemented on sector 17 at the APS. This system includes a Siemens platform system with a kappa stage, a 2x2 Mosaic CCD detector, servo based custom counterbalancing system, Newport alignment base, and customized software and system integration. This system is integrated with the beamline control system (EPICS), and allows for remote status and administration of the data collection.

The core of the system is the Siemens Mosaic detector, which with its 160 x 160 mm square active area is designed for use at a synchrotron facility. This detector is based on the proven SMART CCD detector, and features field serviceable modules, as well as interchangeable phosphors. The four quadrant modules all feed into a single Pentium Pro framebuffer under Windows NT, where the data collection and analysis is performed.

The customized platform goniometer includes counterbalancing of the detector, 4 axes of rotation (Kappa system), main beam monitoring, and full synchronization of axes and shutter system with the detector. A motorized linear stage is included for control of the sample to detector distance. The data collection and strategy software have been modified both for the operating system and Kappa geometry, as well as communication with the EPICS control system.

Highlights of the design process and the results of the in house and onsite commissioning tests will be presented.
